Pediatric Care

It is recommended by the American Dental Association that a child’s first dental visit should take place within 6 months of the appearance of the first tooth. Early dental visits help ensure healthy development of teeth and prevention of any potential problems. The sooner a child is introduced into regular dental visits, the better the opportunity it is for them to become more comfortable with seeing the dentist. Usually, when seeing children for the first time, we don’t perform any treatment, we just get the child comfortable by showing them our cool gadgets like the “squirt gun”.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a mildly sedative gas often administered to young patients to help calm nerves and make the procedure easier for both the patient and dentist. At OmniSmiles, Nitrous Oxide is FREE for all patients under the age of 14.

Fluoride Treatment

Did you know that most dental insurance companies cover fluoride treatment for the teeth of children under the age of 14? That is because dental fluoride has been widely known to improve the health and condition of teeth! It combines with the minerals in our teeth to form stronger enamel. It can also help repair teeth in early states of cavity formation

Fun Fact: In 1945, Grand Rapids, MI became the first US city to add fluoride to its water supply.

Over the counter toothpastes and mouthwashes contain fluoride, but professional fluoride treatments in office have a much higher concentration.

These treatments typically only take a few minutes. The fluoride we use at OmniSmiles is applied with a brush. Afterwards, it is best not to eat or drink for 30 minutes to allow the teeth to best absorb the fluoride.

Depending on a person’s cavity risk and the status of their oral health, these treatments may be recommended every 3, 6, or 12 months. Additional measures may also be recommended for cavity prevention, such as prescription or over the counter toothpastes, gels, or mouth rinses.

Sealants

Just like fluoride, most dental insurance companies cover sealants for children under the age of 14! Sealants are a conservative type of dental filling that are often placed on kids and younger adolescents in areas that are the most susceptible to developing cavities. The area we are specifically referring to are the deep grooves that we normally have on the biting surfaces of our molars. By filling in these deep grooves not only does it prevent bacteria from getting in there, it makes for much easier cleaning of these areas. Effectively filling and sealing off these grooves can help prevent decay from forming as is recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) as a comprehensive treatment modality. Sealants on permanent teeth are said to reduce the risk of cavities by up to 80%.

The process of applying a sealant is absolutely painless and requires no drilling of the teeth. As time passes, some patients show more wear and tear on their sealants. These patients may need to have their sealants replaced in their early teenage years.
