We agree, the day that you get your braces or Invisalign off is a huge day! What a relief yeah!? I bet you’re excited to eat things that you previously couldn’t eat out of fear of damaging the braces. The unfortunate news here is that your teeth won’t stay straight forever and will likely shift back towards their original position before you started treatment. How do we deal with this? Simple, wear a retainer!

In order to prevent tooth movement after orthodontic treatment, your Orthodontist or General Dentist will likely advise you to wear your retainer as much as possible for the first 90 days after everything is completed. Thereafter, it is recommended to be worn every night to prevent tooth movement out of alignment.

Removable Retainers

These appliances can be made from metal, plastic, or a combination of both. They are made from a traditional mold or from a digital impression once your treatment is finished. These appliances provide the pressure and guidance needed to prevent your teeth from shifting. It is imperative that you wear your retainer as directed by your doctor.

Permanent Retainers

Permanent retainers are made by bonding a wire to the back side of your front 4-6 teeth. It is great in the sense that you do not have to remember to wear your retainer, but there are some downsides to permanent retainers. The main disadvantage of having a permanent retainer is that it’s difficult for you to clean around the bonded wire. If you are unable to keep up with regular hygiene appointments and/or have poor oral hygiene, this type of retainer is not recommended for you.
